2017 workshops were conducted at the LCFS West Philadelphia Senior Center, the South Philadelphia Free Library, and the McPherson Square Library
Location matters. The workshops varied in space, place, and people representing a wide array of Philadelphia neighborhoods, affecting the dynamic of the group at each workshop.
Education and reading levels varied in each workshop — this may have shaped understanding and retention of workshop content.
Participants did not immediately know what cooling centers were, where they are located and how they become activated. Once described, some participants were familiar with this City service.
The presentations on climate change and energy conservation resonated most with participants.
While survey answers did become slightly more robust in the post-workshop survey, indicating knowledge acquisition through the workshop, it was difficult to pinpoint an overall shift in knowledge gained. Nonetheless, the following themes arose in the post-workshop survey responses:
Climate change was most often associated with erratic weather patterns.
Satisfaction with the workshops overall.
Greater use of formal vocabulary
Participants expressed a desire for more workshops overall, particularly workshops that address extreme cold in the winter.
